Default Pen Issues in Clip Studio Paint

I recently made a video about my two favorite default pens in Clip Studio Paint: the Calligraphy pen and the Turnip pen. In that video, I claimed that the Turnip pen created a sharp Feathering Point, but I've since realized that I made an error.

After re-adding the Turnip pen, I discovered that it no longer produces the sharp Feathering Point by default. There are two possible explanations for this discrepancy: I may have carried over customized brushes from previous versions of Manga Studio (now Clip Studio Paint), which would have altered the Turnip pen's behavior. Alternatively, I may be experiencing a case of the Mandela effect, where my memory of the Turnip pen's behavior is incorrect.

Regardless of the reason, the default Turnip pen in Clip Studio Paint does not produce the sharp Feathering Point as claimed in my previous video. Therefore, I'd like to provide a tutorial on how to modify any brush in Clip Studio Paint to achieve the sharp Feathering Point effect.

Creating a Custom Brush

To create a custom brush, start with a base brush (e.g., the G pen). Highlight the brush and click to create a copy of the current tool. Name the new brush (e.g., "Feathering").

Adjusting Tool Properties

Click the wrench icon in the tool properties section and adjust the following settings:

  • Brush Size:
    • Change the pressure sensitivity using the drop-down menu.
    • Adjust the size to the desired setting.
  • Anti-Aliasing:
    • Set to None to avoid gradations of color.
    • Prefer a solid black or white brush for this layer.
  • Brush Shape/Tip:
    • Leave set to Circle.
  • Spray Effect:
    • Set to None.
  • Stroke:
    • Set to Fi Brush Settings for Smooth Drawing.

Brush Settings for Smooth Drawing

  • Stabilization: Set to 20 for a smooth drawing experience.
  • Post-Stabilization: Turned on to refine the drawn line.
  • Taper: Set to a moderate value to control how much the line continues drawing after the brush is lifted. A high taper value is not recommended as it can produce unwanted results, while a lower taper value creates a more natural, pen-like drawing experience.
  • Feathering: Controls the sharpness of the starting and ending points of the drawn line. Set to Non to create a sharp feathering point.
  • Brush Size: Set to 60, which is a relatively large size.
  • Starting and Ending Points: Fine-tune the brush settings for a more natural drawing experience.
    • Starting Point: Set to a high value (e.g. 100) for a sharp, precise start to the drawn line.
    • Ending Point: Set to a moderate value (e.g. 20) for a slightly rounded finish to the drawn line.
  • Speed: Not relevant for this brush, so turned off.

Feather Point Clarification

  • The tapered feather point only applies to the start point when drawing. To apply the feather point to the end point, the numbers need to be switched.
  • It's possible to have the feather point on both the start and end points all the time, but I find it more useful to have it only on the start point.
  • I use feathering for specific purposes, as mentioned in a previous video.
  • The default settings of the Turnip pen are unclear, and I don't remember altering or changing them.
