Pixel Art in Clip Studio
As a fan of Clip Studio, I was excited to discover the possibility of creating pixel art within the program. This journey began when I stumbled upon GB Studio, a program for creating Gameboy games, which made me realize the importance of developing my pixel art skills. After exploring various pixel art programs, I decided to stick with Clip Studio, my trusted drawing companion. With a few tweaks and some creative problem-solving, I found that Clip Studio could be used to create stunning pixel art. The secret? Turning off anti-aliasing.
To take my pixel art game to the next level, I created a range of custom tools that enhance the workflow and optimize Clip Studio's potential for pixel art.
Tools Created for Pixel Art in Clip Studio
1. Dot Tool
The Dot Tool is a default tool in Clip Studio that creates a single pixel. It's perfect for drawing and can be used as is.
2. Pixel Bucket
The Pixel Bucket is an optimized paint bucket specifically designed for pixel art. It fills areas without anti-aliasing, making it an essential tool for creating crisp, pixel-perfect art. To create this tool, I simply unchecked "Apply to connected pixels only" in the tool properties of the regular paint bucket.
3. Replace Color Tool
The Replace Color Tool is a separate tool that replaces a color everywhere on the same layer. It's a game-changer for pixel art, as it allows for quick and easy color changes. I created this tool because it's used so frequently in pixel art creation, and having it as a separate tool saves time and streamlines the workflow.
Drawing Tools for Pixel Art
1. Dither Tool
The Dither Tool creates a checkerboard pattern for a pseudo-shading effect in pixel art. It's incredibly useful for creating shading effects without having to manually place individual pixels.
2. Pixel Spray Tool
The Pixel Spray Tool works like a spray can, applying pixels in a random pattern. It's perfect for creating a noisy effect in an area. However, be cautious when using this tool, as it can create a large number of unique tiles, which can be a concern in certain formats.
3. Ellipse Tool
The Ellipse Tool allows for easy creation of circles and ellipses with a snap-to-grid feature. It's a lifesaver when creating circular or oval shapes, as it helps avoid weird angles and uneven circles.
4. Lasso Draw Tool
The Lasso Draw Tool is a lasso fill tool with no anti-aliasing. Inspired by a tool in Aseprite, it allows for quick and easy sketching of scenes. This tool is the opposite of the spray-can tool, as it reduces the number of unique tiles, creating cleanly filled areas that are perfect for optimizing art.
5. Wand Tool
The Wand Tool is a regular wand tool with anti-aliasing turned off. It's useful for pixel art, as it allows for precise selection of pixels. I recommend having this tool as a separate tool from the usual wand tool to avoid accidentally turning off anti-aliasing in other situations.
Using the Lasso Draw Tool and Setting up a Grid in Clip Studio
Lasso Draw Tool
The Lasso Draw Tool can be used to draw lines and create cool textures by going back over it multiple times. It's also great for fixing jagged edges in your artwork.
Setting up a Grid
To set up a grid in Clip Studio, follow these steps:
- Open the Auto Action window
- Record an Auto Action
- Go to View > Grid Ruler Settings and set up the grid as desired (in this example, each big square is 32 pixels, divided into four little squares of 8x8 pixels each)
- Go to View > Show Grid to toggle the grid on and off
- Save the Auto Action and drag it to the Quick Launch for easy access
- Give it a custom icon that represents its function
Snap to Grid
To enable or disable snapping to the grid, go to View > Snap to Grid. You can also add Snap to Grid to the Quick Launch for easy access and give it a custom icon that represents its function.
The Benefits of Setting up a Grid
Setting up a grid is essential for precise control when using tools like the Copy Stamp tool. It allows for precise manipulation of pixels, making it a must-have for pixel art creation.
Pixel Art Tools in Clip Studio
Clone Stamp Tool
The Clone Stamp Tool is a powerful tool that allows you to clone a selection of pixels and paint it onto another area of the canvas. To use the tool, press the Alt key and click on the reference point, then move to the new location and click to draw. This tool is perfect for creating repeating patterns and saving time in pixel art creation.
Copy Move Tool
The Copy Move Tool allows you to move a selection of pixels while leaving the original pixels intact. To use the tool, make a selection and then use the Copy Move Tool to move the pixels. This tool does not create a new layer; it simply moves the pixels. It's perfect for manipulating pixel art, such as making a pillar taller by selecting and moving pixels repeatedly.
Tips and Tricks
- Holding the Alt key while using the Clone Stamp Tool allows you to select the reference point and then draw.
- You can use the Clone Stamp Tool to clone small details, such as a light underneath an object.
- The Copy Move Tool is useful for making small changes to pixel art, such as adjusting the size of an object.
With these tools and techniques, you'll be well on your way to creating stunning pixel art in Clip Studio. Happy creating!
