Getting Started with a Pen Tablet
When getting started with a pen tablet, it's essential to understand the basic setup, pen functionality, and customization options to get the most out of your device.
Basic Setup
To begin, place the pen tablet directly in front of your monitor, which is ideal for beginners as it mimics the traditional drawing experience.
Pen Functionality
Understanding how the pen interacts with the tablet is crucial. Here are the basics:
- The pen touching the tablet is equivalent to holding down the left mouse button.
- One tap with the pen tip is equivalent to a single click.
- Two taps with the pen tip are equivalent to a double click.
- Moving the pen above the surface without touching it will move the cursor.
Pen Button Functionality
The pen button on the side of the pen can be used for additional functions:
- Press the button to right-click.
- The same button can be set to double-click and middle-click.
Understanding Your Wacom Tablet
Pen Functionality
Moving the pen while the pen tip touches the tablet is equivalent to dragging the mouse, which is how drawing works with the pen.
Tablet and Screen Alignment
The four corners of the pen tablet's drawing area correspond to the four corners of the screen. Touching the tablet with a pen will show the cursor in the same spot on-screen. For example, if the pen is near the bottom left of the tablet, the screen's cursor will be at the bottom left too.
Customization Options
Different keys can be assigned using the driver settings, and Wacom tablets can adjust mapping and range of movement of the cursor using the tablet properties.
Adjusting Brush Strokes and Pen Feel
To get the most out of your pen tablet, it's essential to adjust brush strokes and pen feel to your liking.
Wacom Pen Tablet Settings
Adjust basic settings from the Wacom pen tablet Properties → Pen → Tip Feel.
Graphics Software Settings
In CLIP STUDIO PAINT, adjust pen pressure settings in the File menu. Set the sensitivity of pens and brushes used in CLIP STUDIO PAINT. Use the Auto adjust pen pressure feature to automatically create the best settings based on drawn lines.
Adjusting Brush Settings
Test the feel of the brush by trying adjusted results and clicking [OK] when satisfied. Each subtool has its own options to adjust pen pressure, and each pen and brush can be adjusted in detail.
Pressure Settings
Display pressure settings by clicking the icon next to the subtool's [Tool property] palette → [Brush size]. Apply and disable pressure settings, set a minimum pressure, and set pressure along a curve. Add control points to the curve by clicking and adjusting details, and remove control points by clicking and dragging them out of frame.
Preparation for Drawing
With these adjustments, preparations for drawing with the tablet are complete. You're now ready to start creating with your pen tablet!
