Mastering the Symmetry Ruler in Clip Studio Paint
The Symmetry Ruler is a powerful tool in Clip Studio Paint that allows artists to create symmetrical drawings with ease. In this comprehensive guide, we'll explore the ins and outs of the Symmetry Ruler, from setting it up to using it to create stunning designs.
Getting Started with the Symmetry Ruler
To access the Symmetry Ruler, select the Ruler tool and then choose the Symmetrical Ruler subtool. By default, the number of lines is set to 2, and line symmetry is enabled. To create a symmetrical drawing, simply click and drag a line anywhere on the canvas. Any drawing on one side will be reflected on the other side. To keep the ruler perfectly vertical or horizontal, hold down the Shift key while drawing.
Repositioning the Ruler
To reposition the ruler, go to the Operation tool and select the Object subtool. Click on the ruler to select it, and then click and drag the ruler to reposition it. You can also use the handles to change the angle if needed.
Precise Control
For more precise control, use the options in the Object Properties. For example, you can use the Object Properties to center the ruler on a 12-inch canvas.
Setting Up a Symmetry Ruler in a Graphic Design Tool
To set up a Symmetry Ruler in a graphic design tool, create a 600x600 pixel square to set the center X to 600, which will center the ruler vertically. Make sure to change the unit dropdown to PX to see the size in pixels.
Enabling/Disabling the Ruler
To disable the ruler, uncheck the Snap option. Alternatively, click the tiny icon next to the ruler to toggle it on/off.
Important Notes
Only one Symmetry Ruler can be active on the canvas at a time. Adding a new Symmetry Ruler will disable any existing ones.
Initial Symmetry Ruler Setup
When first created, the Number of Lines option is set to Two, which means one line above the center point and one line below the center point. This is suitable for simple bilateral symmetry. You can change the Number of Lines option to create more complex symmetrical designs.
Symmetry Options in Drawing
When drawing with symmetry, anything drawn will be reflected both horizontally and vertically. The drawing will be mirrored on both the X and Y axes. If the "Line Symmetry" checkbox is turned off, the drawing will be duplicated and rotated in each section instead of being mirrored. The "Line Symmetry" option is only available for even numbers of lines; it will be dimmed if an odd number is chosen.
Drawing a Simple Flower with Symmetry
To draw a simple flower with symmetry, set the number of lines to an even number (in this case, six) and turn off "Line Symmetry". Use the Object sub-tool and select the Ruler. Center the Ruler on both the X and Y axes. Go to the Figure tool and choose the Ellipse shape. Note that shapes can work with symmetry too.
Using Snapping with Various Tools
If a tool is not working with the Ruler, open the Sub-tool Detail palette by clicking the icon. Go to Correction and tick "Enable Snapping". This allows snapping to work with almost any tool. You can use snapping to add character to flower petals or add a circle to the flower design.
Using the Symmetry Ruler Tool
The Symmetry Ruler is a fun and useful tool for creating various designs, including Halloween-themed coloring pages. You can use it to create great Spirograph effects, especially when used with shapes that have symmetry. To create beautiful snowflake designs, set the "Number of Lines" setting to 16, turn on "Line Symmetry", and use the Pen tool to draw lines, holding down the Shift key to draw straight lines from the Pen's last point.
