Transferring Custom Settings in Clip Studio Paint: A Step-by-Step Guide

Are you tired of re-setting up your preferences and customizations every time you switch devices or reinstall Clip Studio Paint? Look no further! In this post, we'll show you how to transfer all your custom settings, including brushes, workspace, shortcuts, and more, from one instance of Clip Studio Paint to another.

Finding the Materials Location

The first step in transferring your custom settings is to find the location of the materials in Clip Studio Paint. Surprisingly, this location is not easily accessible through the app's settings or preferences. To find the materials location, you'll need to open the all-in-one Clip Studio app (not the regular Clip Studio Paint) and click the gear icon. This will reveal the location of the materials folder, which is the same for both Mac and PC versions of the app.

The Original vs. Custom Folder

When you open the materials folder, you'll see two folders: the original folder containing default settings and a new folder with customizations that has been renamed to .new. Launching Clip Studio Paint from the original folder will display the default settings, as if the app is being opened for the first time. While the default settings may be familiar, re-setting up your preferences and customizations can be a tedious process.

Avoiding Re-Setup

The goal is to avoid re-doing these customizations and instead, use the existing ones. To do this, we'll demonstrate how to save customizations, including brushes, workspace, shortcuts, and other customizations made in Clip Studio Paint.

A Simple Solution

Rather than importing the workspace, which would require saving it as a material, bringing it back down, and then importing it, we'll take a simpler approach. We'll close Clip Studio Paint and rename the file. This will allow us to transfer all our customizations to a new device or instance of the app.

Clip Studio Paint License and Portability

Did you know that the digital version of the Clip Studio Paint license allows for installation on two devices, such as a laptop and PC? Additionally, the configuration folder can be copied and pasted onto a thumb drive or uploaded to cloud storage (e.g., Dropbox) for easy transfer between devices. This means you can use the same configuration across multiple devices, making it easy to work on the go.
