Using Basic Rulers in Clip Studio Paint: A Comprehensive Guide

As a comic artist and illustrator, I'm excited to share with you the ins and outs of using basic Rulers in Clip Studio Paint. While the software's brush engine is excellent for stabilizing lines, sometimes a ruler is necessary for that extra level of precision. Fortunately, Clip Studio Paint has built-in Ruler tools that can help you achieve professional-looking results.

Accessing the Ruler Tool

To get started, click on the Ruler Tool icon in the Tool Bar. This will open up a range of preloaded Ruler types in Clip Studio Paint, each with its unique features and uses.

Liner Ruler

The Liner Ruler is perfect for drawing straight lines. Here's how to use it:

  • Draw a line using the Liner Ruler.
  • Brushes will snap to the Ruler when starting a brush stroke close to it.
  • Use the Operation > Object Tool to move the ruler around.
  • Click on points to change just one side of the ruler.

Additionally, you can:

  • Hold the Shift key while making a Ruler to snap to 45-degree angles.
  • On mobile devices, check the box to snap to 45-degree angles instead of holding the Shift key.

Curve Ruler

The Curve Ruler is similar to the Liner Ruler but allows you to create curved lines. Here's how to use it:

  • Start by clicking to create a point on the curve.
  • Each subsequent click will create another point in the curve.
  • Double click to create the last point on the curve.
  • Clicking on a previously made point deletes it.
  • Use the Operation > Object Tool to adjust points after creation.

Special Rulers

Clip Studio Paint also offers two Special Rulers: the Parallel Line Ruler and the Concentric Circle Ruler.

  • The Parallel Line Ruler makes all marks go in the same direction.
  • The Concentric Circle Ruler makes all marks follow a perfect circle around a point.

Using Radial Line Ruler in Clip Studio Paint

The Radial Line Ruler is perfect for creating fun burst effects that emanate from the same point. To turn off Snapping for these rulers, go to View and uncheck Snap to Ruler or Snap to Special Ruler.

Additional Tips and Features

There are many more fun features and uses for Rulers in Clip Studio Paint. Be sure to explore the software's other Ruler tools, including the Perspective Ruler, which will be covered in a future episode.
